The Pheu Thai Party voted unanimously Monday to give the post of House speaker and Parliament president to Somsak Kiartsuranon, a Khon Kaen MP
Political observers regarded the unanimous decision of the Pheu Thai executive board as the show of leadership of prime minister-in-waiting Yingluck Shinawatra.
Earlier, the red-shirt movement tried to pressure the party go give the top legislative post to Apiwan Wiriyachai. But Apiwan announced on Sunday that he had opted out from the contest for the position of House speaker.
It was believed that Yingluck had lobbied Apiwan to pull out for fear of rifts in the party.
Somsak is seen as qualified for the position as he has outstanding performance as deputy House speaker during the last term.
Somsak said he is ready to accept the position in line with the decision of the executive board.
Somsak's first job is to organize a vote of MPs to elect Yingluck as the prime minister. He will then countersign a royal command to appoint Yingluck as Thailand's first woman prime minister.
Outgoing Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wontrairat of the Bhum Jai Thai Party expressed support for Somsak.
Boonjong said he believes Somsak would be able to coordinate with other parties very well because he is a cool-headed person.
The Election Commission has endorsed 496 MPs, allowing the House to convene its first meeting on Tuesday.
The House secretary-general has informed all MPs to gather for a group photo of the new House at the Siam Guardian Angel and King Rama VII ground at 2pm Monday.
The photo session will be held before His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn who will represent His Majesty the King in inaugurating the new parliamentary session at the Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall at 5 pm Monday.
