According to the Kenya Wild Life service, the elephants of the whole African continent has faced extinction. In 1979, there were estimated to be 1.3 million elephants but by 1989 only 600,000 remained. This catastrophic loss was almost entirely due to the killing of elephants for their ivory. Currently, there are approximately 400,000 remain in Africa.
Five tonnes of confiscated and processed ivory, which were seized in Singapore in 2002 were burned during the African Elephant Day Enforcement in Tsavo West National Park, Kenya, July 20/2011. (see pictures)
