Machu Picchu's ruins are seen neatly excavated in 1997. The unique beauty and historical importance of the site led UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage in 1983. Bingham and his team discovered this sites in 1911, its places were covered by vines and jungle growth, but the homes of the indigenous Indian families that Bingham encountered during his first visit are gone. They are now living on the other parts of the mountain ridge. These families are hired by the Peruvian government to be caretakers of the sites.
