The self-exiled billionaire telecoms tycoon and the 23rd. former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had been in the office from 2001 to 2006 before he was deposed by a bloodless military coup in September 2006 for allegedly abusing power. He was later charged with massive corruption in 2008 and terrorism in 2010 for inciting red-shirted street protests.
